About Takako

Takako Kumada

Professional Violin & Viola Teacher in Tokyo

I began studying piano and ballet at the age of three and started playing the violin at six, growing up in a home where music was a natural part of everyday life. After graduating from Musashino Academia Musicae in Japan, I continued my musical journey in the United States, studying at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Northwestern University. During this time, I had the privilege of learning directly from internationally respected teachers and chamber ensembles, experiences that continue to shape my teaching today.

In my lessons, I focus on helping students understand why we play in a certain way, not just how. By exploring the meaning behind technique, I aim to share the joy of truly understanding music. My goal is to offer warm, encouraging lessons where students feel supported, inspired, and confident as they grow.

Beyond individual lessons, I believe music is something to be shared. At Takako Violin, students are part of a warm, welcoming community where connection is just as important as progress. Ensemble sessions are a central part of my teaching, bringing students together to listen, collaborate, and grow through making music with others.

Every ensemble session includes a relaxed tea time, offering a chance to connect, exchange ideas, and enjoy the feeling of belonging. After concerts, we often share a meal together, and we also hold seasonal gatherings such as New Year tea parties. These moments help create a supportive, international “third place” where students of all ages and backgrounds can feel at home.
