The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) is one of the world’s most respected music examination boards. Founded in the United Kingdom in 1889, it has more than 120 years of history and is now used by music students in over 90 countries.
ABRSM exams are designed to support students in developing a well-rounded musical education. Through the process of preparing for the exams, students learn not only how to play their instrument, but also how to understand music more deeply.
What does the ABRSM exam include?
For instrumental exams such as violin, students are assessed in several areas:
- Performance – playing selected pieces

- Scales and arpeggios

- Sight-reading – the ability to read and perform music at first sight

- Aural tests – listening and musical understanding

There are graded levels from Grade 1 to Grade 8, allowing students to progress step by step. In addition, ABRSM also offers music theory exams, which help students understand notation, harmony, and musical structure.
Why take ABRSM exams?
Preparing for ABRSM exams helps students build:
- Strong technical skills
- Musical understanding
- Reading ability
- Confidence as a performer
The exams provide clear goals for students and are internationally recognized, which can be valuable for students who may study music abroad in the future.
